Magandang Gensan! The General Santos City government kicked-off city-wide campaign to ban open burning and to formally launch local ordinance regulating the use of plastic bags and styrofoam with the “General Santos City Stop Open Burning Awareness Fun Run” last December 10, 2017

Burn calories not trash. That was the spirit of the “Stop Open Burning Awareness Fun Run 2017” held at the Academic Oval of UP Diliman on the beautiful day of July 2nd. The “Stop Open Burning Awareness Fun Run 2017” is an event for raising awareness about the detrimental effects of open burning to human health as well as the environment.

The judges have spoken! Who won the People's Choice Awards? The prizes were all handed out on 14th September 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Manansala Room A, The Sulu Riviera Hotel, Matalino Street Diliman, Quezon City. A total of 52 participants attended the ceremony. The participants were comprised of students, advisers, parents, DENR-EMB and UNIDO representatives.

In order to involve children and teenagers and raise their awareness regarding the ill effects to human health and the environment of open burning practices as well as to promote responsible waste management practices in the community, UNIDO and DENR-EMB encourages individuals and institutions to participate in awareness raising competitions. Participants are invited to submit photos that depict “Open Burning, its Health and Environmental Impacts” or posters illustrating “3Rs for a Better Tomorrow”.

The photographs taken and the cartoons drawn. A total of 113 posters and 55 photos were submitted to the 2016 Poster-Making and Photo Competition. After careful selection, the top 12 entries of stunning photos interpreting “Open Burning: Health and Environmental Impacts” and the posters emphasizing “3Rs for a Better Tomorrow” were exhibited at the DENR lobby of the main building from September 5 to 9, 2016. The voting for the People’s Choice Award for poster and photo entry also took place during the exhibition.

The 2016 Poster-Making and Photo Competition was launched on June 22, 2016, simultaneous to the opening of DENR-EMB’s 2nd National Integrated Waste Management Exhibition: 2016 Environmental Summit at the 5th Level, Mega B, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.

The inception workshop was held at the Conference Room A, AQMTC Building DENR-EMB Compound, Visayas Ave. Diliman, Quezon City from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on 20th May 2016. Undersecretary Jonas Leones delivered the opening remarks while EMB Director Atty. Juan Miguel Cuna provided words of encouragement and motivation.

On February 13-15, 2017, a site visit at the General Santos Sanitary Landfill (SLF) was conducted by a team lead by Ms. Haidee Penero, National Project Manager for the BAT and BEP in Open Burning Project of the United Nations Development Organization (UNIDO) and Component IV Project Consultants from AECOM, Mersabel Veciana and Roes Sy Tamco. The team was assisted by Mr. Philipp Biboso from the DENR-EMB Region XII Office. An interview with Director Ma. Socorro C. Lanto –Regional Director of DENR-EMB Region XII and Mr. Fernando Pareja – OIC, Head of Solid Waste Management Division (SWMD) of General Santos City was also conducted.
